Description
Smaller colonies are the most vulnerable to robber bees because they do not have a large number of guard bees to protect the colony yet.  Our Medium Robbing Screen is 7″ wide x 7″ tall so it will fit on almost any 5 frame nuc or a larger 8 and 10 frame box with the entrance reducer…even Layens or Long Langstroth entrance holes or slots (less than 7" in length).  Verify the height of any hand-holds that are cut out of the box since these screens assume that the 7x7 area is flat.  The robbing screen is slotted for quick installation and removal.  Two stainless #8 x 1/2″ screws are included with the robber screen.

How does it work?  The screen is placed so the entrance to the hive is as low as possible and the robber bees smell the honey and try to get in through the screen.  Meanwhile the “home” bees protect the top opening where most of the robber bees will not use.

Installation:  Place the robber screen over current hive entrance so that it is as low on the cage as possible.  Insert the screws through the skinny part of the opening but only snug the screws to the screen.  Then remove the robber screen by lifting the screen and pulling out through the larger openings.  After dark, simply put the screen back on and in the morning the house bees will re-orient to the top opening of the robber cage.  Generally it is not necessary to run a robber screen most of the year unless your bee yard is overloaded with colonies.
